Where to park?

One of the most common questions from new students is “Where do I park?”
Over the years in Old Town, this question has gotten trickier to answer. Personally, my favorite spot is the light pole out front where I lock my bike, but I realize not everyone has the luxury of traveling on two wheels or two feet! I have yet to try a scooter, but it looks quite convenient once I get up the nerve. We also have a Trolley stop right on the corner of King and Union if you are lucky with your timing.

So where you can conveniently park your vehicle without making yoga a stressful event?

Free Parking: Parking is always free before 8 AM, so try one of the morning classes and you’re guaranteed a great spot. For other all other times, free street parking starts just two blocks off King Street north of Cameron Street or south of Duke Street. On Sundays most spaces are free all day as well as on holidays!

Fun tip! Parking is always free on Saturdays during market hours in the Market Square Parking Garage (301 King St.), located directly under Market Square Plaza from 5:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. year round.

Map nerds! A long time ago the Army gave me the honor of commanding a Geospatial Engineering detachment. That experience cemented my appreciation for a good map. Now GPS is so ubiquitous, we take for granted the amazing ease with which we navigate our world. When I found the City of Alexandria’s GIS Parking Viewer, I spent an embarrassing amount of time playing with the labels, legends, and layers. Check it out to find some of those secret spots and avoid any tickets. #nerdalert
